UN human rights mission head to visit Ukrainian prisoners of war in Donetsk
Human rights commissioner of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Darya Morozova, and Fiona Frazer, the head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, will visit the Ukrainian prisoners of war in the DPR detention facilities on Saturday, August 6, the DPR ombudsperson's office said on Friday.
"Human rights activists will familiarize themselves with the incarceration conditions and talk with the prisoners of war," the statement said. "They are also planning to visit a penal colony in Elenovka whose building was damaged by shelling."
Morozova said on Thursday that the DPR authorities are prepared to exchange 42 Ukrainian prisoners, adding that all of them are ready for a prisoner swap in the format enshrined in the Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements.
According to Morozova, 966 people are held in custody by the Ukrainian side, among them 318 military service members, 454 persons detained for political reasons and 154 people unrelated to the conflict in the Donbass region. Information on 40 other persons from the total number of prisoners held by the Ukrainian side is ascertained.
