Ukrainian Party of Regions insists on Oleksandr Turchynov's resignation as Rada speaker
Members of the Regions Party faction in the Verkhovna Rada are initiating resignation of Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov, a representative of the highly controversial Batkivshchina party, the acting chief of the latter's faction, Sergei Sobolev told a news briefing Thursday.
He said the Regions Party's deputy Nikolai Levchenko issued a query about Turchynov's resignation Thursday but the Rada did not put it up for voting, as it failed to get the support of a needed number of MPs. Still a number of sources in the Rada indicate that the Regions rallied the support of some deputies of the UDAR party faction.
Thursday afternoon, the Party of Regions was holding talks on the issue with the Economic Development group led by a former representative of their party, former Prime Minister Anatoly Kinakh.
The Regions faction walked out of the Rada Thursday, with its leader Alexander Yefremov saying it would be a show of utmost hypocrisy to continue work in the current situation.
"People are being killed in the east of Ukraine today and Turchynov is issuing orders for these killings," he said. "And when we asked to suspend the antiterrorist operation, you pretended that nothing special was happening".
Some 70 people are rallying in front of the Ukrainian parliament building in Kiev to demand parliament speaker Oleksandr Turchynov's resignation.
This would automatically end his powers as acting president.
