Merkel admits possibility of sanctions against Ukrainian govt officials
Germany's Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday she admitted a possibility of sanctions against separate Ukrainian officials but only if the Ukrainian state encroached on the principles of democracy.
She said it speaking at a conference of the Christian Democratic Union /CDU/ in Erfurt, the federal state of Thuringia.
Merkel recalled she had always spoken for resolving the internal political crisis in Ukraine through a dialogue of the opposing sides, but she warned the CDU would call on the world community to introduce sting sanctions against the "oppressors."
The Christian Democrats issued a resolution on the 'Ukrainian problem'.
In addition to it, Merkel urged the U.S. to cooperate with the Europeans in helping Ukraine tap the ways of settlement of the crisis and discuss the tiniest nuances for the sake of attaining common objectives.
These efforts should be consolidated, she said.
