Ukraine looks abroad for probe into nation's unrest
Ukraine is asking international organizations to help investigate recent unrest that has swept the country, the presidential administration confirmed to Itar-Tass on Friday, referring to a meeting between administration deputy head Andrei Portnov and Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muihnieks.
"We would like respected leaders of international organizations to help us investigate what is going on in Ukraine," said Portnov. "Our official position is that we ask for assistance to look into and resolve this crisis." A fair evaluation should be given to actions of both police and protesters, he added.
Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs is now inquiring into opposition links to the preparation of a coup. Acting Minister Vitaly Zakharchenko confirmed that the ministry had evidence the opposition had prepared a scenario of force in advance.
Electronic media had been seized in an authorized search of the Batkivshchyna party's office in Kiev at the request of people working there. Seized servers were referred to the security service as the opposition might have planned a coup, Zakharchenko told journalists.
Rallies in favor of European integration started in Ukraine last November when the government announced it had suspended preparations for signing an EU association agreement.
In January, protests spilled over into a riot that seized a number of administrative buildings in Kiev and more than 10 regional administrative buildings, mainly in western regions.
On January 28, Ukraine's president accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov and his entire cabinet, one of the opposition's demands.
