Ukrainian forces take control over two thirds of "gray zone" in Donbass — official
Ukrainian forces have taken under control two thirds of the so-called "grey security zone" in Donbass, Ukrainian presidential advisor and aide to the defense minister Yury Biryukov told Pryamoy TV channel on Wednesday.
"From the situation that we began with in May 2014, two thirds of the territory were liberated. Almost the whole 'gray zone' was liberated and taken under control," Biryukov said.
The so-called "gray security zone" separates the forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), and the Ukrainian army. The borders of the zone are defined by the Minsk Agreements, and sending troops to settlements in the gray zone constitutes a violation of the Minsk deal. However, the Ukrainian forces have repeatedly announced taking control of new positions in the "gray zone" over the time of their operation in Donbass.
