Kiev forces increase shellings in eastern Ukraine after Poroshenko's interview
Ukrainian forces based in the Opytnoye village have opened fire on the territory of the embattled Donetsk airport more than 140 times over the past 24 hours, the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic military spokesman Eduard Basurin said on Friday.
"The area of the Donetsk airport and [neighboring] Volvo-Center has come under major artillery and mortar shelling," Basurin was quoted by the Donetsk news agency as saying.
Shellings from 120 mm artillery system, 120 mm and 82 mm mortars have been registered, he said.
The Kiev forces have increased activity following an interview of President Petro Poroshenko with the Ukrainian STB TV channel on Thursday in which he said that the war would end when Kiev regained Donbas and Crimea.
"This speech became a signal to the Ukrainian troops to increase the shellings," Basurin said.
Earlier on Friday, the DPR's defense ministry said Kiev forces had violated the ceasefire regime in the republic more than 50 times over the past 24 hours. One militia member was killed and another one was seriously injured.
