Poroshenko ready to put the issue of Ukraine's federalization to referendum
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is ready to put to a referendum the issue of Ukraine's federalization and the status of the Russian language. The Ukrainian leader made the announcement to this effect during his working visit to Chernigiv where he met students of the local Shevchenko National Pedagogical University.
"I'm ready to put to a referendum the issue of a second state language and the question of federalization, and I am sure the Ukrainian people will say a resounding 'no'," the UNIAN news agency quotes Poroshenko as saying.
Earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk pointed to the need to endorse the basic provisions of the new Ukrainian Constitution at the all-Ukrainian referendum.
Leader of the Ukrainian Choice public movement Viktor Medvedchuk has said on Tuesday that all Ukrainian citizens, including residents of Donbas, must take part in the referendum.
For that end, according to him, "it's necessary to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine by strictly and consistently implementing all provisions of the Minsk agreement", to pass a new law on a referendum and to work out amendments to the constitution.
