Poroshenko: If Donbas conflict escalates, Ukraine to declare martial law
The Ukrainian government will declare martial law throughout Ukraine if there is an escalation of the conflict in the east, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said in an interview with Spanish daily political newspaper El Pais on Wednesdayb night, according to Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda.
"If the conflict escalates, I will be ready to declare martial law throughout the country, and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will support it," Poroshenko said.
"I am not doing this now, because it would lead to the restriction of democracy and freedom, and would threaten the development of the economy," he said.
"Who will go to a country that is at war? We plan to take in investments of billions of dollars in the coming months," the president said.
"The situation is very difficult now, but we must reform the economy and, at the same time, wage an exhausting war and to prevent its spread," Poroshenko said.
