Compulsory basic military training planned in war-torn Ukraine
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry intends to impose compulsory basic military training in the country, the ministry press service reports on Monday.
Both men and women will be involved in the training, with civil defense and medical training programs in place for women, according to the ministry.
"First experimental groups will be enlisted in major cities shortly," the ministry report said. "The task of training guerillas and sabotage-reconnaissance groups that will be engaged in case of Ukraine's occupation" is also envisaged within the concept.
The experience of combat operations in eastern Ukraine will be widely used in the training of military, the ministry said.
The southeastern Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been the scene for fierce clashes between troops loyal to Kiev and local militias as the Ukrainian armed forces are conducting a military operation to regain control over the breakaway territories, which on May 11 proclaimed their independence at local referendums.
