Ukrainian president to be soon questioned over Euromaidan crimes - prosecutor general

Investigators of the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office will soon summon President Pyotr Poroshenko for questioning over Euromaidan crimes, Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko said Wednesday.

"The questioning has been delayed. I think it will take place soon," Lutsenko said when asked when the head of state will be questioned as an eyewitness.

Earlier, Radical Party leader Oleg Lyashko, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Alexander Turchinov and Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andrey Paruby were questioned.

In November 2013, the Ukrainian government announced that the signing of the agreement with the European Union was delayed. In response, the Verkhovna Rada opposition blocked parliament work and a long-term rally started on Independence Square, or Maidan.

A three-month standoff started, dubbed "Euromaidan", during which aggressive nationalists seized a number of administrative buildings in downtown Kiev, built a camp town and created "self-defense detachments", which clashed with law enforcers.

The culmination point was when unidentified snipers opened fire on Institutskaya Street February 20, 2014. According to official data, 53 people were killed by their bullets. Overall, more than 100 people were killed and hundreds wounded during the standoff in Kiev on February 18-20. Those who died of gunshot wounds included both protesters and Berkut riot police officers.

Ukraine's Interior Ministry initiated criminal proceedings on mass killings of civilians, in connection with which ex-president Viktor Yanukovich and a number of o ther officials were put on a wanted list. Two years later, the "snipers case" on Maidan remains unsolved.
