EU financing watchtowers on border with Russia
The European Union will invest about €2.5 million in the construction of watchtowers on the Polish-Russian border, the head of the Polish Cultural Centre in Russia's westernmost Kaliningrad city, Thomas Omanski, told Tass on Monday referring to the Polish Warmian-Masurian state border service.
The European Union finances 75% of watchtower construction worth about €3.5 million, he said, without specifying where the rest of the money would come from.
Six 35 to 50-meter-high watchtowers along the 200-kilometer-long land section of the state border will be commissioned before June. They will be situated at different distances from the state border and their equipment will make it possible to control the border round-the-clock, a spokesperson for the Warmian-Masurian border service said.
Russia, for its part, is building no watchtowers, said a spokesman for the Federal Security Service's border department for the Kaliningrad region, Oleg Dzhurayev, adding that the Russian system of border protection had proved its safety on many occasions.
The 200-kilometer-long Polish-Russian border, an outside frontier of the EU, runs along the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
A total of 3.2 million Polish nationals and 3.3 million Russians crossed its four automobile border-crossing points last year.
