Russian, Moldovan foreign ministers to discuss bilateral relations, Transdniestria
The foreign ministers of Russia and Moldova - Sergey Lavrov and Andrey Galbur - will hold talks in Moscow on Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The sides will consider opportunities to give momentum to multifaceted cooperation after overcoming the political crisis in Moldova and forming in January 2016 of a new government of the country.
"The work should be based on principles laid down in the Friendship and Cooperation Agreement of 2001," the Foreign Ministry said.
Lavrov and Galbur will discuss prospects of bilateral relations and the Transdniestria settlement.
Transdniestria, a largely Russian-speaking region, broke away from Moldova following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Its relations with Moldova's central government in Chisinau have been highly mixed and extremely tense at times ever since then. In 1992 and 1993, the tensions erupted into a bloody armed conflict that claimed the lives of hundreds of people on both sides.
