Putin tells Obama urgent measures needed to stabilize situation in Ukraine

In his telephone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of emergency measures to stabilize the situation in Ukraine, the Kremlin press service reported on Saturday.

He stressed the necessity of the work with radical opposition, which "has brought confrontation in Ukraine to an extremely dangerous verge."

The telephone conversation was initiated by the American side.

The two leaders discussed in detail most acute issues of the bilateral and international agenda, including the situation in Ukraine, the Kremlin press service said.

"The Russian president stressed the necessity of urgent measures to stabilize the situation, laying a special emphasis on the work with radical opposition, which has brought confrontation in Ukraine to an extremely dangerous verge," the press service reported.

The sides "noted the constructive character of bilateral cooperation on the Iranian nuclear programme and agreed on further close contacts on that matter," the press service noted.

Putin and Obama exchanged views on the implementation of agreements on the destruction of Syria's chemical arsenals and agreed to continue close cooperation to promote Syrian settlement.

Apart from that, the U.S. president congratulated his Russian counterpart on the success of the ongoing Olympic Winter Games in Russia's Black Sea resort city of Sochi.
