Over 9,000 Ukrainian refugees enter Russia's Rostov region on Friday

More than 9,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived to Russia's southern Rostov region on Friday as people try to leave besieged towns in south-eastern Ukraine, Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights Pavel Astakhov said.

Over just 24 hours (on June 12-13) the Rostov region has provided shelter for another 9,603 residents of Ukraine, Astakhov wrote on his Twitter microblog.

"Another 533 Ukraine's residents, including 243 children, have been accommodated in the Rostov region," he said. "Others are heading in transit for their relatives and friends in other regions."

Astakhov said the flow of refugees from the neighboring country's troubled south-east continued.

"The Rostov region has almost no more opportunities for hosting refugees," he said. "We have involved the Saratov, Volgograd, Tula, Ryazan and other regions."

The ombudsman called on volunteers and social activists to provide assistance to refugees.

"Everyone who wants to help, join us and address directly the Rostov region's administration," he wrote on his account.
