Russia's ombudsperson calls UN attention to violation of journalist rights in Ukraine
Russian Human Rights Ombudsperson Ella Pamfilova has appealed to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to pay attention to violations of rights of Russian journalists in Ukraine.
In her letter to Ban Ki-moon, Pamfilova wrote that emergency circumstances had forced her to write the letter.
"An absolutely inadmissible situation has developed in Ukraine. It is restricting and violating the rights of Russian journalists, thus preventing them from performing their professional duties in its territory," the appeal published on the ombudsman's website on Friday says.
Pamfilova wrote she was concerned about the unprecedented pressure exerted on Russian journalists in Ukraine.
"Russian journalists are being denied the right to enter the country. Ukrainian law enforcers are detaining Russian journalists under various pretexts and are banning them from sending materials to their editorial offices. They even resort to using force against employees of Russian media outlets working in Ukraine and abduct journalists," Pamfilova stressed.
