Charge d'affaires to represent Moscow in Kiev — foreign ministry

The charges d'affaires will now represent Russia in Kiev and Ukraine and Moscow, head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's political department, Alexei Makeyev, said on Friday.

"For more than two years, Ukraine has been represented in Moscow by a charge d'affaires. Now the situation in the Russian embassy will be the same. The charge d'affaires has been appointed who is tasked with maintaining those infrequent contacts," he told Radio Liberty.

Makeyev noted that no one is talking about breaking diplomatic relations," because there are 3 million Ukrainians in Russia."

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on July 28 relieving incumbent ambassador to Ukraine, Mikhail Zurabov, of duties. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on July 29 that Moscow had asked preliminary consent - agrement - from the Kiev government to the appointment of Mikhail Babich as the next ambassador.

Kiev is represented in Moscow by charge d'affaires Ruslan Nimchinsky. Vladimir Yelchenko, Ukraine's former ambassador to Russia, was appointed Kiev's Permanent Representative to the UN in 2015.
