Kiev court arrests senior Russian general in absentia

A district court in Kiev has ruled to arrest in absentia the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Gen Valery Gerasimov and another ten military whom the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has placed on a list of wanted persons, Anatoly Matios, Military Prosecutor of Ukraine said on Wednesday.

"The Shevchenkovsky district court in Kiev has entertained the investigator's request and has issued a resolution on bringing to the courtroom and putting to custody all those who were named earlier at a news briefing -- that is, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and another ten Russian military," he told the 112 Ukraina television channel.

SBU investigations chief Grigory Ostafiychuk told a news briefing earlier in the day Gen Gerasimov and the aforementioned military stayed on the territory of Ukraine illegally in August 2014 during combat operations in the areas of Ilovaysk, a town in the war-torn east Donbas.

In the meantime, the Russian Defense Ministry's spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the ministry officials were unaware of the SBU initiatives on arresting to the top Russian military.

The statements like the ones made by Ostafiychuk only confirm the inadequacy of the people at the helm of that organization, he said.

The Russian Defense Ministry is prepared "to organize a worthy meet-and-greet, a conversation from the bottom of its heart and a brisk but indelible farewell ceremony to the SBU operatives," Konashenkov said.

The Russian government has said on innumerable occasions there had never been any Russian military presence in Donbas.

"There are no Russian armed units there and our counterparts in Ukraine, in Europe and in Washington confirm this all the time," the Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said recently.
