Putin signs law on 'undesirable organisations'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a bill on 'undesirable organisations'. The text of the law was placed on the official portal of legal information on Saturday.

The law says that a foreign or international, but only non-governmental (NGO), organisation can be recognised as undesirable if it "poses a threat to basics of the constitutional order of the Russian Federation, to the country's defence capacity and security."

Russia's prosecutor general or his deputies are to make such a decision or to revoke it in coordination with the Russian Foreign Ministry. The Justice Ministry is to be in charge of making up lists of 'undesirable organisations' and of publishing them.

The law imposes, in particular, a ban on activities, setting up and opening of structural subdivisions of an 'undesirable organisation' in the Russian Federation and a ban on its spread of information materials.
