Another Russian NGO added to foreign agents list
Russia's Justice Ministry has added one more non-governmental organization (NGO) to its list of foreign agents, according to the ministry's online registry.
The interregional charity organization Siberian Environmental Center in Novosibirsk, Russia's third-largest city, became the 39th NGO to be labelled as foreign agent under a law passed in 2012 under which the tag is applied to NGOs with any foreign funding whose activities can be defined as political.
The law, which was adopted in the summer of 2012, requires NGOs that receive funding from abroad and are deemed to be involved in political activity to register with the Justice Ministry as foreign agents and to file a report on their operations to officials every quarter. The law also obliges NGOs to print the term foreign agent on all of their publications. Any NGO failing to comply with the rules could face higher penalties.
Siberian Environmental Center was founded in 1999 with the aim of protecting the environment, raising environmental awareness among citizens and involving them in environment-related activities.
