No threat from Russia to NATO — Stoltenberg
Russia is of no imminent threat against NATO, the organization's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said during a news conference after the bloc's meeting on Afghanistan on Saturday.
"We don't see any imminent threat against any NATO ally," he said. "Russia is neither the strategic partner. We are not in a strategic partnership with Russia which we tried to develop after the end of the Cold War, but we are neither in the Cold War situation. We are in a new situation which is different from anything we have experience before."
He said at dinner on Friday the discussion of the Russian issue was informal.
"The main message from that dinner is that the alliance is united, that we stand together in our approach (towards Russia - TASS), based on defense - strong defense, and constructive dialogue," Stoltenberg said.
On July 1, at a news conference following Russian-Finnish talks, Putin expressed dissatisfaction with NATO's intention to increase its contingent in the Baltic countries. "The movement of our troops on our own territory is declared an element of aggressive behavior, and NATO military exercises close to our borders are for some reason not considered to be such. We believe this is absolutely unfair and does not correspond to reality," he said.
