Protesters in Moldova's capital Chisinau to elect national salvation committee on Sunday

Protesters in Moldova plan to hold a large-scale rally in Chisinau on Sunday and elect a national salvation committee, Igor Dodon, the leader of Moldova's Party of Socialists, told TASS on Friday.

"A mass rally will be organized on Sunday, at 11:00 a.m. local time (12:00 Moscow time). The rally will elect a national salvation committee that will elaborate a program of taking the country out of the profound political and economic crisis the current authorities have thrown the country into," he said, adding the rally's co-organizers were Our Part and the Dignity and Truth (DA) Civil Platform.

"We used to be separate and we had different ideas. Now we have got united for the first time for the sake of one goal, namely to organize early parliamentary elections," he stressed.

He said on Saturday the party would send its activists to the regions to inform people about protests in Chisinau. "It is a necessary step, since people in the regions are misinformed by the mass media controlled by the authorities. No protest actions will be organized in Chisinau on that day," he said.

Mass protests have been held in Chisinau since Wednesday, when the opposition picketed the building of the parliament while it was appointing the government. As a result, it took six minutes for the parliamentary majority formed around the Democratic Party of Moldova to approve the cabinet of Pavel Flip. The candidate for prime minister was given no time to present the program of his future cabinet. This hasty appointment triggered riots, with protesters trying to take the building. On Thursday, the protest leaders met with the parliament speaker, Andrian Candu, to hand over their demands of government resignation and parliament dissolution. The speaker promised to give an official answer by Friday afternoon.

On Friday, Teleradio Moldova has given air time to the leaders of anti-government protests after thousands of protesters demanding the freedom of the press blocked the building of the television company.
