Latvia's decision to put USSR on a par with Hitler Germany immoral -- Foreign Ministry

Latvia's decision to put the USSR on a par with Hitler Germany is an immoral attempt to distort history, Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Alexander Lukashevich said on Friday.

On May 15, the Latvian parliament adopted amendments to the country's Criminal law that introduce responsibility for public negation, justification and gross trivialization of the aggression of the USSR and Nazi Germany against Latvia.

"The decision of Latvian parliament which was clearly passed to suit political interests cannot but cause our legitimate indignation. We regard it as a new and cynical attempt of the Latvian authorities to distort history by equalizing Hitler Germany with the Soviet Union that made a decisive contribution to victory over fascism and to desecrate the memory of those who saved the world from the 'brown plague' at the cost of irretrievable losses," the diplomat emphasized.

The new amendments are also violating Latvia's international commitments.

"No one has cancelled the decisions of the Nuremberg Tribunal that lie at the core of the contemporary international legal system," Lukashevich said.
