Marine Le Pen describes sanctions against Russia as stupid
Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French National Front, has described sanctions imposed against Russia as stupid.
"Sanctions against Russia are an exceptional stupidity that is adding fuel to the fire of conflict (in Ukraine) and is creating a hostile climate with regards to Russia, which is an integral part of a diplomatic settlement to the Ukraine crisis," Marine Le Pen told the European Parliament on Wednesday.
Marine Le Pen stressed that Europe should not treat Russia with neglect.
"Russia is a leading regional power without which it is impossible to settle the Ukraine crisis," Marine Le Pen went on to say.
She believes that the only way to end violence in Ukraine is to sit down to talks and find a common solution.
Marine Le Pen calls for independent international investigation into the May 2 tragedy in Odessa
Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French National Front, on Wednesday called for an independent international investigation into the May 2 tragic events in Odessa.
"It is absolutely necessary to carry out an independent investigation. The European Parliament could have taken part in it, if it were not blind to the situation in Ukraine where women and children continue dying and were cities are being bombarded right at Europe's doorstep," Marine Le Pen told journalists at the European Parliament residence in Brussels.
Euromaidan's supporter Rebecca Harms, the leader of the "Greens" faction in the European Parliament, also called for an independent international investigation into the May 2 events in Odessa and into the current situation in Donetsk and Lugansk in the east of Ukraine.
She believes that everybody would benefit from this investigation, which could be carried out by experts from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE); the Council of Europe and the European Parliament.
On Wednesday, the European Parliament held a hearing into the May 2 tragedy in Odessa in which 48 people died and more than 200 were injured. The eyewitnesses of those events who gave their accounts demanded an independent investigation and punishment for the culprits. In the meantime, the Council of the European Union on Wednesday cut "the black list" for Belarus excluding eight names from, the Council's press service said but noted that one new name should be added to it.
The "black list" for Belarus includes over 250 Belarusian officials banned from entering the European Union and storing money in European banks.
The list was drawn up after the 2006 presidential elections in Belarus in connection with numerous violations of human rights.
In the autumn of 2008, the European Union suspended the sanctions having motivated the decision by the improving human rights situation in Belarus. However, in reality, that was done at a time when Belarus was thinking over whether to diplomatically recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia which ultimately separated from Georgia after the Georgian aggression in August 2008.
The European Union re-activated and expanded its "blacklist" after the presidential elections in Belarus in December 2010.
