Russian, Chinese combat ships enter Aegean Sea for Mediterranean joint drills


A group of combat ships from the Russian and Chinese navies have entered the Aegean Sea and are heading for the area of their Joint Sea 2015 naval drills, Russia's Navy spokesman Captain First Rank Igor Dygalo said on Friday.

The Russian and Chinese navies will hold the active phase of their drills dubbed Joint Sea 2015 in the Mediterranean Sea on May 17-21.

"A group of combat ships comprising the Linyi and Weifang frigates from the Chinese Navy and the Samum missile hovercraft from the Russian Black Sea Fleet have today completed passing through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits area and entered the Aegean Sea," the spokesman said.

The Russian and Chinese warships are continuing their voyage to the area of the Russia-China Joint Sea 2015 naval exercises in the Mediterranean Sea. As they are passing through the seas, the ships are practicing air defense and the analysis of the situation at sea," the spokesman said.

The Joint Sea 2015 drills will involve nine warships, including the Linyi and Weifang frigates and a support vessel from the Chinese navy. Russia's navy will be represented by the Moskva guided missile cruiser, the Ladny escort ship, the Alexander Otrakovsky and Alexander Shabalin large amphibious assault ships, the Samum missile-carrying hovercraft and a salvage tug.

Russia's Moskva missile cruiser passes Black Sea straits for joint drills with China

The Black Sea Fleet's Moskva guided missile cruiser has started passing through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits for joint drills with the Chinese navy in the Mediterranean Sea, Russian Navy spokesman Capitan First Rank Igor Dygalo said on Friday.

The Moskva guided missile cruiser left the Russian Black Sea Fleet's main naval base in Sevastopol on May 14 and is heading for participation in the joint Russia-China drills, the spokesman said.

"During the period of the naval exercises, the Moskva Guards Missile Cruiser will accommodate the field headquarters of the command of the united ship grouping at sea. The Moskva cruiser will be the place for exercising direct command of ships during the accomplishment of missions in accordance with the Joint Sea 2015 Russian-Chinese naval drills in a designated area of the Mediterranean Sea," Dygalo said.

The Moskva cruiser is expected to pass the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits area in the Black Sea by the end of Friday.
