FBI blames Russian hackers for attack on JP Morgan Chase computer system
The FBI has accused Russian hackers of attacking the computer systems of JP Morgan Chase, Bloomberg reports.
According to the report, JP Morgan Chase and at least four other US-based banks have come under a cyber attack.
The attack resulted in gigabytes of client data stolen. One of the affected banks tied the attack with Russia.
The FBI is now investigating whether the attack was an attempt to seek vengeance for sanctions, imposed on Russia by the USA.
Attacks of Russian hackers
August 6, a report emerged saying that a group of hackers from Russia managed to collect the world's biggest database of internet users' passwords.
Experts of US-based Hold Security company specializing in cyber security said that the database comprised of 1.2 billion passwords and usernames, as well as more than 500 million emails. This data was obtained from 420 thousands of websites.
July 23, US authorities charged three Russian citizens of cyber crimes and money laundering, as reported by New York County District Attorney (Manhattan) Cyrus Vance Jr.
According to the investigation, in 2013, the hackers cracked more than 1.6 thousand user accounts of StubHub, one of the world's biggest companies that sells tickets to music shows and sports events. Using stolen credit cards, the data of which was stored within the hacked user accounts, they bought tickets for different events and then resold them.
Losses incurred by their criminal actions amounted to at least $1.6 million.
July 15, representatives of US-based TV broadcaster CBS stated that Russian hackers cracked their CNET resource, which specializes in news about gadgets and computers, and obtained access to the user data.
CBS insisted that a group of Russian hackers dubbed 'w0rm' stands behind the database stealing including personal data of 1 million people.
In early July, US law enforcement authorities reported about the arrest of Russian citizen Roman Seleznyov (Seleznev). He is considered one of the most dangerous cyber fraudsters and accused of stealing personal data of American citizens. The arrested turned out to be a son of a State Duma lawmaker representing the Liberal Democratic Party faction Valery Seleznyov.
Seleznyov Jr., known among the hackers under the nickname Track2, is suspected in stealing and selling credit card data of US citizens between October 2009 and February 2011.
For these purposes, he had hacked the US retail payment systems using malicious software, the investigators said. Seleznyov allegedly controlled several servers worldwide, created and maintained a number of special forums to sell the stolen information.
