The High State Security Prosecution releases EOHR Lawyer Mustafa Zidan on bail |
Wednesday, 9 December 1998
Today, Wednesday 9 December 1998, the High State Security Prosecution ordered the release of EOHR lawyer Mustafa Zidan on a LE 200 bail. He was interrogated under article 80D of the Penal Code about charges of disseminating false information with the purpose of harming Egypt's national interests. Zidan appeared before the prosecution today at noon to be questioned in connection with case 945/1998-Higher State Security. Many lawyers attended the interrogations with Zidan. On 2 December 1998, Mustafa Zidan was summoned by the Higher State Security Prosecution for his role in gathering information for EOHR's report on the events of Al-Kosheh. On 6 December, following the release of EOHR secretary general Hafez Abu Seada on a LE 500 bail, the first attorney general of the Higher State Prosecution urged that lawyer Mustafa Zidan be brought for questioning. The EOHR highly appreciates the solidarity shown by all civil society organizations and human rights activists at the local, regional and international levels, as well as by all national and democratic forces. It also commends their stances and awareness of the ongoing campaign to tarnish the reputation of the EOHR and other human rights organizations in order to undermine their role and remove their existence. The EOHR reaffirms its firm stance in defense of human rights and basic freedoms.
