ACTION REQUEST
From the Parests of Lori Berenson October 16, 1997 To all supporters of Lori Berenson *****************************UPDATE****************************** CONGRESSWOMAN CAROLYN B. MALONEY Representative Maloney (Dem., NY) has been meeting with us and assisting us on a regular basis ever since Lori's arrest. She has made her office available to us and assigned staff to support us. In sum, we are indeed very fortunate to have as our Congressional Representative a person who is so dedicated and caring for the well-being of her constituents. Representative Maloney has championed Lori's Constitutional right to due process and justice and recently spent four days of her life in a whirlwind trip to visit American prisoners in Ecuador and Peru and to meet with government and religious officials and human rights leaders in those countries. Her visit to Lori in Yanamayo was made at personal risk to her own health in the high altitude and is very much appreciated. For these endeavors, Representative Maloney is now taking flack from "conservative" media. In particular, she has been unjustly criticized for wasting tax payers' money by visiting Lori. CALL TO ACTION It is essential for our elected officials to support the fundamental Constitutional rights of their citizens. PLEASE: (1) Send a note of thanks to Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, House of Representatives, 1330 Longworth House Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20515. and/or (2) Write a Letter to the Editor of the New York Post, 1211 6th Avenue, New York City, NY 10036, in which Fred Siegel stated on Monday October 13 (page 25) that rather than worrying about the concerns of New York's economy "Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan) is off tending to the concerns of Laurie Berenson, jailed by Peru for supporting the Tupac Amaru guerrillas who took more than 100 Peruvian legislators hostage last year." To set the record straight, Congresswoman Maloney has been a major advocate of current legislation aimed at providing statistical sampling in the decennial Census which would most certainly impact positively on the economy of New York City and other major urban areas. and/or (3) write to Bob Grant, radio talk show host (WOR Radio, 1440 Broadway, New York, NY 10018) who expressed the same sentiments as the New York Post. OTHER NEWS Webmaster Bill Wedemeyer has been updating Lori's web site. To view it type http://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/9968/ all in lower case letters.
