Syria denies rebels' control over energy station in Aleppo

The Syrian government denied Thursday media reports that armed groups have taken over an energy station in the country's northern city of Aleppo, the state media said.

The state-run SANA news agency cited a military source as denying the reports and said the electricity outage in some parts of Aleppo resulted from the armed groups' attacks on a gas station in the countryside of Aleppo.

On Wednesday, SANA quoted Syrian Minister of Electricity Adnan Khamis as saying that the attacked gas station produces 1,050 megawatts of electricity a day to feed Aleppo.

The minister said the assailants fired bombshells at the station, adding that the outage will continue around the clock.

Many attacks have been carried out against Syria's energy sector over the 20-month-old crisis that resulted in millions of dollars in losses, reports said.
