US congresswoman to visit Syria

The Democratic representative of Hawaii, Tulsi Gabbard, reportedly left for Damascus on Wednesday to conduct a "fact finding" mission to end the war plaguing the country.

"Tulsi felt it was important to meet with a number of individuals and group including religious leaders, humanitarian workers, refugees, and government and community leaders," Gabbard's spokesperson Emily Latimer told Foreign Policy on Wednesday.

Gabbard is one of the few members of the U.S. Congress that has spoken out against the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and his government.

In addition to her outspoken criticism of U.S. regime change hawks, Gabbard also introduced a bill this month that would have the U.S. government stop supplying weapons to terrorist groups.

Gabbard's spokesperson did not confirm whether or not she will meet with President Assad; however, almost all foreign diplomats that have traveled to Syria in the past have met with him.
