Lavrov to discuss Syria with Kerry, address U.N.'s Sustainable Development summit


Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will on Sunday continue his programme at the 70th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

One of the key events on the agenda will be Lavrov's meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. "Particular attention will be paid to Syria," the Russian delegation told TASS.

Based on Russian President Vladimir Putin's initiative, Moscow consistently seeks parallel efforts of the international community to create a wide front to fight terrorism and find a political solution to the crisis. These aspects are expected to be raised once again by Lavrov.

Russia's top diplomat on Sunday will also address the United Nations summit for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda.

The Foreign Ministry said Russia is "ready to actively contribute to effective implementation of development agenda priorities called upon to give an impetus to multisided efforts to achieve progressive economic growth and sustainable development".

"We will act in line with national priorities and within the framework of relevant international obligations we assumed," the ministry said, adding that: "Guided by principles of solidarity, our country will continue to make a significant contribution to international development by creating and strengthening economic, intellectual, information, scientific and technical potential of partner countries."

Moscow says it aims to boost cooperation with organisations of the U.N.'s global development network, including operational programmes and funds.
