Syrian army recaptures countryside of Assad's heartland in Latakia

The Syrian troops on Monday regained control over rebel-held countryside of the coastal province of Latakia, the heartland of Assad's administration, media reports said.

The declaration came one day after the pro-government media said the army regained the villages of Hambushieh, Ballotta, Sheikh Nabhan, al-Kharatta, al- Khanzorieh, Barouda, and Shaban Mountain in the northern countryside of Latakia.

Last week, the rebels unleashed an all-out attack against the countryside of Latakia, the core area of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's rule, which is dominated by people from the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to whom the ruling elite in Syria belongs.

The army immediately launched a counterattack backed by the air force to dislodge the rebels.
