Turkish warplane crashes near Syrian border, pilot dead


A Turkish F-16 jet fighter crashed Monday in Osmaniye province near the Syrian border, and its pilot was found dead, army statement and local media said.

Osmaniye Governor Celalettin Cerrah, who led the search-and- rescue operation, said "the pilot of the crashed plane has been martyred."

Some parts of the plane were found in the Yarpuz region of the Amanos Mountains.

The jet fighter was reported to crash at 2:15 p.m. local time ( 1115 GMT), said the statement released by the Turkish Armed Forces, adding the pilot sent a message before losing radio contact, saying "I'm jumping."

So far, the cause of the accident has been unknown.
