Israel says closely monitoring developments in Syria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that his country was closely monitoring the Syrian military's air attacks against rebel forces.

Addressing the Israeli Air Force's (IAF) 165th graduating class at the IAF's Haterzim air base in the Negev, the Israeli prime minister said "We see what is happening in Syria".

"Israel is monitoring developments in Syria and will do its utmost against this threat and against all threats" Netanyahu said.

Stressing that "Israel's hand is extended in peace to those seeking peace," Netanyahu, however, warned that "to those that threaten us - know that our long arm will forcefully strike in order to defend the state of Israel".

Last year's graduation took place on the 20th anniversary of Operation Solomon, a 1991 covert Israeli military operation to take Ethiopian Jews to Israel.

This year's theme is the 45th anniversary of the A4 Skyhawk, a U.S. Vietnam-era jet that is now used to train pilots in the course's advanced stages. However, the A4 will be retired and replaced by an Italian-made trainer in about a year.

The Air Force will receive 30 Alenia Aermacchi M-346 jets in an over 1 billion U.S. dollars deal approved in July.
