Russian virology center checks Ebola vaccines for effectiveness

Scientists from the Vektor state-run scientific center of virology and biotechnologies based in research center Koltsovo in south-western Siberia's Novosibirsk region are checking simultaenously several vaccines against Ebola virus that have been creadted in the center. Some of them have already been checked on animals and have proved to vary in efficiency, Vektor deputy director Alexander Agafonov said at a TASS press center in the city of Novosibirsk on Tuesday. In his words, scientists should find the most promising and safe vaccine and should focus on its development.

"We have developed several variants of vaccine and are checking them. It is needed to check to which degree they are safe. Tests are being carried out on animals. A vaccine which will prove to be the most effective, will be used," he said.

Vektor director Valery Mikheyev told TASS that a vaccine being developed at the center will differ drastically from those which are being created in the United States and Canada.

Vektor is one of two institutions in Russia where special conditions are provided for examining Ebola virus, which is considered the most dangerous in the world. Therefore, the center tests not only its own developments, but also vaccines and medicines created in other centers in Russia and other countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the toll of Ebola virus that has broken out in West African countries exceeded 4,000, with the majority of lethal cases falling on three countries, notably Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. More than 8,000 people are infected with the deadly virus.

The Vektor center of virology and biotechnologies, founded in 1974, is one of the largest institutions in this sphere in the world which initially sought to examine causative agents of lethally dangerous diseases such as anthrax and rabbit disease to create biological weapons on their basis. Vektor is developing methods of diagnosing and treatment of infectious diseases.
