Syria: Chavez Visits, Slam’American empire
Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, on a visit to Syria, has said he shares Damascus' "international political vision" and its anti-American stance.
Chavez arrived in the Syrian capital on Tuesday evening and was met at the airport by President Basher al-Assad.
"What unites us is our firm stand against imperialism and the hegemonic attempts being made by the American empire," Chavez said speaking at a news conference with Assad at the airport.
During his three-day visit Chavez said he would focus on "creating working committees to build bridges and communications channels," between Syria and Venezuela.
He also invited Assad to visit Venezuela describing such a visit as a "day of joy and celebration for the Venzuelan people."
Assad replied that "the horizons for this visit are open and our positions are in accordance," adding that the two countries were working together to protect themselves from Washinton's attempt to isolate them.
The two leaders who are scheduled to meet again later Wednesday are expect to sign a series of accords on energy, trade, culture and tourism, Syrian government sources said.
Some observers have raised doubts about a Syria-Venezuela startegic alliance, citing Chavez' support for United Nations Security Council resoultion 1701 on Lebanon's conflict with Israel.
Syria opposes the resolution which calls for the deployment of a United Nations force in Lebanon to oversee the disarming of Syria's Hezbollah guerrilla allies.
