2 NPA rebels killed in Matanao encounter
Two rebels were killed and a soldier was wounded in an encounter in Matanao, Davao del Sur yesterday morning as the communist rebels continued to launch attacks in the region.
Aside from Matanao, gunfights between members of the New People's Army (NPA) and government troopers were reported yesterday in Paquibato and Calinan districts in the city and in the towns of Banaybanay and Lupon in Davao Oriental.
Lt. Col. Raymund Dante Lachica, commander of the Philippine Army's 3rd Infantry Battalion (IB), told TIMES that the first set of attacks happened around 4:30 a.m. in three barangays of the far-flung Paquibato District, where members of the NPA's Pulang Bagani Command 1 (PBC) simultaneously attacked the army detachments in Mangani (Barangay Paradise Embac), San Pablo (Barangay Fatima) and Malabog proper (Barangay Malabog).
At the same time, rebels also staged an attack in Barangay Maputi, Babaybanay. Communist rebels belonging to the Section Committee 18, SRC 2 of Southern Mindanao Regional Command (SMRC) attacked the Maputi Patrol Base of the Army's 72nd IB.
Around 8:30 a.m., 3rd IB troopers encountered the rebels in Barangay Inayangan, Calinan district.
At 6:18 a.m., NPA also attacked another 72nd IB detachment in Barangay New Visayas in Lupon.
At 8:15 a.m., 39th IB troopers encountered communist rebels in Sitio Datal Pitak, barangay Colonsabak, in Matanao. The 45-minute fight resulted to the death of two communist rebels and the wounding of a government soldier.
At around 10:50 a.m., government troopers were able to overrun an NPA encampment in Barangay Lumiad following the Paquibato encounters.
Brig. Gen. Bienvenido Datuin, assistant division commander of 10th Infantry Division, said the military hierarchy immediately directed all its units to intensify operations against the communist rebels following the suspension of the supposed fifth round of the peace talks.
"Despite of the declaration of Martial Law, our insurgency operations still continue," Datuin said in yesterday's Kapehan sa Dabaw held at SM City Davao.
