Kuwait recalls ambassador to Iran

The Foreign Ministry of Kuwait has decided to recall its ambassador in Tehran following the attacks on Saudi Arabia's missions in Iran, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) said on Tuesday.

The ministry says the decision has been made "on the backdrop of storming, torching and sabotage activities carried out by a group of demonstrators on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and its Consulate in Mashhad," KUNA reported.

"A Foreign Ministry source said in a statement that such action constitutes a flagrant breach of international conventions and violation of Iran's international commitment over security and safety of diplomatic missions on its lands," the agency said.

Relations between Saudi Arabia and its allies and Iran aggravated after a mob of protesters angry with the kingdom's execution of prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr attacked its embassy in Tehran over the weekend.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Sudan announced they were severing diplomatic ties with the Islamic Republic, while the United Arab Emirates decided to downgrade the level of its diplomatic representation in Iran.
