Russian and Georgian POWs have been exchanged in the Gori district in Georgia
Russian and Georgian POWs have been exchanged in the Gori district, Georgia, reported on Tuesday assistant to the commander-in-chief of the Land Troops Igor Konashenkov.
"We transferred 15 POWs to the Georgian side and received our five POWs. All Russian servicemen, handed to us, are now at a medical centre of special designation in Tskhinval where they are receiving medical aid," he noted.
"We had been waiting for agreement of the Georgian side 24 hours for an exchange of POWs under the principle ‘a list for a list’, which had had to take place back on Monday, but it had been scuttled by the Georgian side that had put forth surprisingly additional conditions. We received quite recently agreement of the Georgian side to exchange POWs on Tuesday," Konashenkov added.
Deputy chief of the Russian General Staff Anatoly Nogovitsyn said on Monday that the exchange of POWs under the principle "a lit for a list" provided for a transfer of 15 Georgian POWs to the Georgian side and 12 POWs to the Russian.
