South Ossetia's prosecutor general dies after being hit by car

South Ossetia's Prosecutor General Merab Chigoyev has died after being knocked down by a car in Tskhinval, the capital of North Caucasian partially recognised republic, South Ossetia's police press service told TASS on Saturday.

"The accident happened at 6.00 p.m. local time at the crossroads of Sovetskaya and Alan Dzhioyev Streets. A car hit the prosecutor general when he was going across the street to his car parked on the curb. He died instantly," the police said.

The suspect driver was detained on the spot, it said.

Chigoyev was South Ossetia's Prosecutor General since May 2012.
