South Ossetia remains Russia oriented

South Ossetia's foreign policy would remain unchanged irrespective of this year parliamentary election's results and would be aimed at independence from Georgia and partnership with Russia, the republic's Foreign Minister, leader of the New Ossetia party, David Sanakoyev, told Itar-Tass Friday.

"The bearings of the people of South Ossetia are inviolable. They were reaffirmed by the results of the two referendums conducted in 1992 and 2006. We seek independence from Georgia and partnership with Russia," he said. "We are sure our country is now going through a turning point in its history that will largely shape its future."

Sanakoyev added the 2008 victory in the long struggle for independence granted the people of South Ossetia unique opportunities it had never had before, that is "a chance to build a strong economy, create civil society, and enter the international arena."

"Our main task is to make the maximum possible use of these opportunities," Sanakoyev said.

The elections to the South Ossetian parliament were "another step towards strengthening our nationhood and development of state institutions," the politician said.

"South Ossetian society is rather concordant over strategic partnership with Russia and in its attitude to the Republic of Georgia, and New Ossetia party, as the society's integral part, sticks to the same principles," Sanakoyev said.

The New Ossetia party was registered at the Republic's Ministry of Justice in December 2012. It is South Ossetia's sole non-parliamentary party that signed a cooperation agreement with one of the Russian State Duma's factions, A Just Russia, in 2013.
