Aggression by Georgia against South Ossetia places the unrecognized republic on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe
Developments in the Trans-Caucasus can be called a war of extermination.
All Georgian war machines are directed at a republic with a population of fewer than one hundred thousand.
The capital of the republic, Tskhinvali, is being subjected to massive bombing from the air, volleys of gunfire, and tank and mortar fire.
Fires are burning in the city and destruction can be seen everywhere.
Many buildings have been destroyed, including the parliament and high rise buildings.
Oleg Teiziyev, member of North Ossetian Public Chamber now in the capital of South Ossetia, says that the city is systematically being reduced to ruin.
Regions outside the capital are not spared either. Dmitry Medoyev, a representative of South Ossetia in Russia, describes the situation like this: Georgian war planes are flying over the capital, bombing it mercilessly. Five populated areas have been razed to the ground with their residents. Medical help is prevented from reaching them; ambulances are fired at.
Georgian planes are reported to have shelled a humanitarian convoy, traveling from North Ossetia to South Ossetia.
Medoyev has described happenings as ethnic cleansing, aimed at driving all Ossetians out of South Ossetia.
Civilians are bearing the brunt of the criminal policy of Georgia, but peacekeepers have also been killed and injured.
The death toll is unknown but is believed to be in the hundreds if not in thousands. The method of war chosen by Georgian politician of shelling squares leads to heavy losses among the population.
Thousands of Ossetians have been forced to seek refuge outside their homes.
Georgian leaders ought to know that their ill-advised action will have dire fallout, including being charged with war crimes.
