Belarus in favour of building up Belarusian-Russian regional military taskforce
In accordance with obligations within the CSTO Belarus believes it is necessary to continue developing the regional military taskforce of Belarus and Russia as the key guarantee of collective military security in the western direction of the CSTO’s responsibility area. The statement was made by a member of the Belarusian delegation accompanying President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko during his working trip to Moscow where the President is supposed to partake in a session of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
The Belarusian side believes there are no doubts the potential for the CSTO’s flexible and timely response to modern challenges should be increased.
According to the source, in Dushanbe CSTO member-states signed a resolution on setting up coordinating councils for illegal migration and emergencies but these bodies have produced no real effect yet. According to the Belarusian side, their agenda should be filled with specific joint measures and a complex strategy for counteracting asymmetric security challenges should be worked out.
Belarusian experts believe, special attention should be paid to preventing terrorism activities in the CSTO responsibility area. In view of the goal the foundation of a CSTO Antiterrorism Committee would fill the existing gap in the Organisation’s efforts in this avenue. But paralleling or substituting the existing CIS or SCO mechanisms is out of the question.
According to the source, enhanced collaboration of special services in the fight against terrorism will essentially increase the security in the CSTO responsibility area.
