Germany establishing cyber defense center
Germany is creating a cyber defense center this year as a result of rising cyberattacks against German interests, mainly from China.
The German Ministry of Interior said the center will open next year and will follow the example laid out by NATO, the United States and Britain.
"There has been a sharp rise in so-called electronic attacks on the networks of German government and local authorities," Ministry of Interior spokesman Stefan Paris said. "Germany is a very high-tech country with considerable experience and know-how, so, of course, others will naturally try to get hold of this knowledge. China is playing a large role in this."
There were about 1,600 such attacks in the first nine months of last year, he said.
Paris said Germany's new cyber-defense center will combine resources from various government agencies, including the federal police and Germany's foreign intelligence agency.
In October, Britain announced it would spend about $1 billion on improved cybersecurity.
The United States in 2009 opened its Cyber Command as part of the military in 2009.
NATO fast-tracked its opening of the Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence in Tallinn, following cyberattacks against Estonian political Web sites, banks and newspapers.
