China expresses satisfaction about outcomes of third China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue

China on Friday expressed satisfaction about the accomplishments made during the third round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) held in Washington from May 9 to 10.

"China is willing to work with the U.S. to actively carry out the outcomes of this round of S&ED and continue to advance the China-U.S. Cooperative Partnership," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu in a statement.

The two-day S&ED was co-chaired by Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Jiang said that, during the dialogue, China and the United States exchanged views on overall, strategic and long-term issues concerning bilateral relations, which was part of the effort to implement the consensus reached by both leaders in January.

Both countries agreed to increase strategic mutual trust and high-level exchanges, deepen bilateral cooperation and beef up coordination on international and regional issues so as to advance the construction of bilateral cooperative partnerships, she said in the statement.

Jiang said that during the economic talks, the two sides had in-depth discussions on promoting the building of a comprehensive and mutually beneficial economic partnership, and reached broad consensus.

Those participating in the meeting were committed to strengthening macroeconomic-policy communication and coordination for the stable and sound development of their economies, Jiang said.

The two sides, meanwhile, stressed enhancing international cooperation to ensure a strong and sustainable world economic recovery, and promoting the global economic governance structural reform to gradually build a just and reasonable new international economic order.

They also agreed to play to their respective advantages in the process of transforming the economic growth mode and adjusting economic structures, and enhance their exchanges and cooperation at all levels and in all areas, she said.

They were also committed to building more open trade and investment mechanisms, and agreed to strengthen information sharing and cooperation in some financial areas to promote the international financial system reform.

Jiang said the two sides signed a China-U.S. comprehensive framework for promoting strong, sustainable, and balanced economic growth and cooperation, and made clear the two countries would have broader, closer and more extensive economic cooperation.

The two countries also publicized the outcomes of the economic track of the S&ED, which included 64 substantial outcomes, she added.

During the strategic track of the S&ED, the two sides had an in-depth discussion on jointly coping with the complicated and volatile international situation and reached consensus on advancing the China-U.S. cooperative partnership, increasing strategic mutual trust and strengthening interaction in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as coordination on regional and global issues, Jiang said.

Among the 48 outcomes of the strategic track of the S&ED, there are two highlights, said Jiang, citing the establishment of the China-U.S. Strategic Security Dialogue (SSD) under the Strategic Track of the S&ED and the establishment of a U.S.-China consultation on Asia-Pacific.

Jiang noted that the two sides intended to hold the first round of U.S.-China consultations on Asia-Pacific in June in the United States.

Additionally, the two sides signed a number of cooperative documents concerning areas such as energy and education, and held a series of meetings discussing issues such as United Nations' peace-keeping affairs, Sudan issues, bilateral law-enforcement cooperation and climate change.

During the S&ED, both sides defined their position and concerns on some differences and sensitive issues, such as human rights and RMB exchange rates, said Jiang, adding the two sides agreed to properly deal with the differences between each other and jointly safeguard the overall situation of the development of the bilateral cooperative partnership.

The S&ED has achieved the objective of expanding consensus, establishing mutual trust and deepening cooperation, Jiang said, adding the dialogue has greatly promoted the construction of the China-U.S. Cooperative partnership based upon mutual respect and mutual benefit.
