Russia able to contribute to sustainable global growth - OECD Sherpa

Geopolitical tasks and measures to fight the climate change and customs barriers are the trends where Russia will be able to play an important role within the presidency in the Group of Eight, said Gabriela Ramos, Sherpa of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

"The G20 was likely to focus on overcoming the effects of the global economic crisis. Today the agenda includes other issues that we should rivet attention to," Ramos told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.

One of the priorities of Russia's presidency in the G8 is to contribute to reaching compromises on key international issues, such as "Syria, of course. Discussions on Syria at the G20 were an important step towards settling the issue", she said.

Commenting on sustainable global growth that Russia named as one of the priorities of its presidency in the G8, the OECD Sherpa said the fight against the climate change was an important aspect.

"I believe that the fight against the climate change is one of the priorities. We shall face it sooner or later and mankind should work out structures, which allow us to reach an agreement on this issue. If Russia exerts effort within the G8, we'll be able to turn to advantage for the benefit of the world economy," she said.

Ramos said it was necessary to work out measures, which were designed to stimulate business to use more ecological technology.

The OECD Sherpa stressed the need to continue the work on removing barriers and other restrictions on trade and investments between the countries. There are certain difficulties in this aspect, she said, adding that "Customs barriers are being regulated by regional agreements. It is difficult to say what influence the G8 can provide."

She believes that if Russia can find areas where barriers, hampering the movement of goods and capitals, would be removed, this would be a breakthrough.
