Putin says Cameron's claim about Russian influence is attempt to shape British public mind
British Prime Minister David Cameron's remark that Putin "might be happy" with Brexit was an improper attempt to put pressure on the British public mind, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the media at the end of his visit to Tashkent for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
"I believe that this is nothing but a bad attempt to influence the public opinion in one's own country. But, as we have seen, it failed to achieve the expected effect. Still more so, after the voting nobody has the right to say anything about Russia's position. This is nothing but evidence of a low level of political culture," the Russian president said.
Putin recalled that Russia had never intervened in or said anything about Britain's exit from the European Union.
"The way I see it, we have been very decent all the way, we closely followed what was happening, but in no way influenced that process or even tried to do that," Putin said.
He added that Cameron's claims had no grounds whatsoever to rely on.
The vote will have global consequences
Putin said that the referendum will have global consequences, but only time will show if they turn out to be positive or negative.
"This will, certainly, have consequences for Britain, for Europe, and for us," he said. "The consequences will be global, they are inevitable; they will be both positive and negative," the president said. "The markets will certainly shrink, they have already shrunk, but everything will be certainly restored," he said.
"The life and practice will show if there are more pluses or minuses" as a result of this, Putin said.
According to the president, "the very organization of the referendum and the subsequent results are nothing more than overconfidence of the UK leadership and its causal attitude to the settlement of the questions momentous for the country and Europe as a whole."
Russia will not interfere
The president stressed Russia did not interfere, does not interfere and won't interfere in the choice of the UK to leave the EU.
"It is a choice of the British people. We did not interfere and we are not going to interfere. Apparently, some formal procedures associated with the British decision to withdraw from the EU will follow. We will watch it carefully and analyzes it," Putin said.
Influence on sanctions policy
According to the Russian president, the UK vote will have no influence on the bloc's policy of sanctions against Russia.
"As for the policy of sanctions, I don't think that it [the referendum] will have any impact on our relations with the European Union in this respect," Putin said, adding that Moscow will take positive steps if European colleagues are ready for a constructive dialogue.
The vote reflects people's discontent
The Russian leader went on to say that the result of the referendum reflects discontent of citizens relatively to the state of security and lack of desire to subsidize weaker economies.
"I believe it is clear for ordinary British subjects why it occurred," Putin said. "Nobody wants to feed and subsidize weaker economies, maintain other states and the whole peoples," he said.
"People are also probably dissatisfied with resolution of issues in the security sphere, which aggravated dramatically at present against the background of strong migration processes," Putin said.
"People want to be more independent," he added.
Consequences of Brexit for exchanges
According to the president, adverse consequences of Brexit for exchanges will be corrected shortly.
"We see if it impacted markets and currencies, it will inevitably affect and is already affecting stock indexes and thus prices on our traditional goods. However, I am confident all that will be corrected in the nearest future," Putin said.
No global catastrophe is expected from the United Kingdom's decision, the Russian president added.
