Brexit makes EU's disintegration practically inevitable, says Soros
Britain's pullout from the EU upon the results of the referendum held on June 23 makes the disintegration of the European community virtually inevitable, the global financier and investor George Soros says in an article published by the Project Syndicate portal on Saturday.
"Now the catastrophic scenario that many feared has materialized, making the disintegration of the EU practically irreversible," Soros said. " Britain eventually may or may not be relatively better off than other countries by leaving the EU, but its economy and people stand to suffer significantly in the short to medium term."
Supporters of the 'Leave' option raised the upper hand in the June 23 referendum, getting 51.9% votes as a result. In contrast, the aspirants to staying within the UK got 48.1% votes.
The plebiscite was advisory rather than mandatory in nature and its results can, in theory, be reviewed by parliament, which may take an opposite decision in its turn.
A new referendum may be held but British Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to fulfill the will of the British people that spoke up for a withdrawal from the EU.
