Civil liberties are severely restricted in Tunisia. Human rights defenders and political opponents are regularly arrested, subjected to unfair trials and imprisoned. Over 2,000 political prisoners fill the Tunisian prisons, where they are subjected to misstreatment and torture. Freedom of expression is greatly curtailed and the authorities censor stories and newspapers they don't like.
